Module #8

#1. I chose the video The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure because after watching the required video, this video was the only one that the title related to the required video. It also sounded more interesting to learn more about the human body.

#2. More Human Than Human: Key Concepts
- August 7th, 1908 three archeologists found the first figure of a woman made out of limestone
- She turned out to be 25,000 years old and is worth 60 million dollars
- People have rarely created images of the body that are realistic
- Old figures all have something in common: exaggerated breasts, genitalia, hips, and ignoring other things like the face and arms.
- It is thought that the human ancestor's brain must have been programmed to make those sexual organs bigger than the other parts because of the importance they played
- Exaggeration of sexual organs did not stay for the Egyptian era
- The Greeks made realistic version of the body and worried about creating the perfect image

The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure: Key Concepts
- The history of statues in the fifth and sixth century
- Greek pottery
- The Olympic Games
- Everyday life
- The Gods
- Idealized strength, beauty, and the human body
- The love with the ideal beauty and the body is still very important today

#3. More Human Than Human and The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure relate the the text because both focus on how artist see the human body. Also how the artists can interpret the body realistically or unrealistically like in statues. Both also talks about the Greeks influence on the statues.

#4. I liked films because they both add depth how others saw the human body. Like the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. The videos also explained how and why the body was interpreted ideally or realistically.

Module #7

#1. Video One: Imperial Rome, Ostia, and Portus: Ancient Architecture and Technology

Key Concepts:
-Architecture of Rome
-Mosaics
-Water and sanitation systems
-Domes
-Roman technology
-Greek columns
-Natural resources

Video Two: Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture

Key Concepts:
-Building designs changing to protect
-Architects are becoming more friendly with eco-friendly materials
-Like bamboo, geothermal solar energy use, and green roofs
-Environment awareness

#2. Imperial Rome, Ostia, and Portus: Ancient Architecture and Technology relates to the text because both talk about many of the contributions made by the Romans and Greeks in architecture. Both using examples of the Parthenon. Last Call for Planet Earth: Sustainable Development and Architecture relates to the text because both talk about the overall concept of green architecture. By using examples of eco-friendly materials that could be used to help the environment. That goal can be reached by using roof top insulators and how to incorporate fresh air, natural light, and gardens.

#3. The films are useful to understand the different technologies used in building designs and how they have evolved throughout history and ways other countries use them. Through the second video I learned how different forms of architecture can help the environment. Showing how any kind of idea can and will contribute to the goal of protecting the planet.

#4. I chose these videos because the titles caught my eye. I chose the first video because I thought it would be interesting to watch the architecture and technology of Rome. Also I chose the second video because the Last Call for Planet Earth sounds very interesting to watch.

Peer Review

http://inquirethearts.blogspot.com and http://lilymac334.blogspot.com

#2. When looking through Sara's pictures I enjoyed the theme she had going on with outdoors. I agreed with all of her elements/ principles she assigned with her pictures. I enjoyed her picture of shape with the flowers in an unusual shape and that picture could also be used to describe color. When looking through Lily's blog I also agreed with all of her elements/ principles she assigned to her pictures. The pictures that stood out to me and really expressed their elements/ principles were the elephant tattoo describing balance and her picture of face painting for emphasis.

#3. When looking through Sara's, I noticed she had went to a different art gallery, but definitely an art gallery I would like to visit. When looking through Lily's, I noticed we did go to the same art gallery by recognizing The Body and Soul artwork that I also used in my blog. I used The Body and Soul for an artwork that made and impression on me and Lily had used it for an artwork she felt a connection with. I think Lily and I had the same thought process when finding this artwork but just chose different sections to put it into.

#4. On Sara's blog, the one artwork that stood out way more than the others was Phillip Stearn's exhibit. Just the video of the flashing lights without a description was enough to catch my eye but after reading her description I was really amazed. I would love to know where this artist came up with such a unique idea and how he incorporated it. On Lily's blog I really enjoyed the Mirrored Room exhibit, it looks amazing. We went to the same art gallery but sadly I could not find this exhibit. I would have loved to be able to stand in there myself and feel isolated. The picture she took really emphasis what it would look like. I would like to know if the artist used the Mirrored Room to represent isolation?

#5. Looking through both of their blogs, I find it helpful what they thought of the pictures they found at the art gallery. It gives me an idea how other minds look at an artwork different than I would. Even on Lily's blog we had the same picture and she used it in a different section than I had so she felt something different than I did when looking at the artwork. Also the elements/ principles project I find helpful to know what other people might incorporate with color, shape, emphasis. It gives a whole new way to look at things.

#6. Looking through the comments on my blog of project one and two I find it helpful to know other people's opinion on my work. It gives an idea how to look at it in their perspective also.

Module #6

Through the Eyes of the Sculptor

#1. From this video I learned that clay, bronze, limestone, and marble is needed to make a sculpture. The sculptor must use feelings to carve life back into the sculpture. To recreate a sculpture, artists make a mold of the old one, get a new stone and recreate the sculpture looking at the old one, using their feelings to bring life to the sculpture.

#2. Through the Eyes of the Sculptor relates to the text because they both go into depth about the different methods that go into sculpting. Both describe modeling, casting, carving, and assembling.

#3. I liked this film because how it started off with Fillion and how he started his career in sculpting. Also how it moves into the history of sculpting and incorporates other sculptors. It explained how aggressive and difficult but awarding it can be.

Glass and Ceramics

#1. I learned that glass and ceramic are the oldest man-made materials. Glass is made from sand, that is a viscus liquid that hardens when cool. Sedimentation allows paint to adhere to the glass definitively.

#2. The video relates to the text because both describe how to create both of these materials. Such as blowing and staining of glass, coiling, glazing for ceramics, using potter's wheel, and slab construction.

#3. I liked this film because it gave instructions of staining glass, and glass blowing. I liked the glass blowing the most; it was interesting to see him shape it the way he wanted and cutting off unwanted pieces.

Art Gallery Visit #1

Artworks that made an impression:

Warren Isensee
Body and Soul, 2007
Oil on canvas

This is the first picture that caught my eye as soon as I stepped into the room, the colors incorporated into the shapes make it look like a maze. It definitely made an impression on me by all the colors ranging from bright to dark.

Sam Francis
Blue-black, 1952
Oil on canvas

Like the first painting, this artwork made an impression due to the color. I have said that I love bright colors that catch my eye but I also love the dark, dreary colors. The dark middle wight the blue, red, and yellow fade in the background remind me of the sea, and I love the brightness on the edges of the dark middle.

Artworks I feel connection with:

Olivier Mosset
Untitled, 2002
Acrylic on canvas

I felt a connection with this because as soon as I saw it I thought of my childhood and playing tic-tac-toe with my friends. It brought back funny memories and made a positive impact on me.

Fred Tomaselli
Echo, Wow and Flutter, 2000

This one always makes a connection with me because it goes back to my childhood. I had a game that had different color tacks and a black board with a light underneath and you could create shapes and lines with different colors.

Artworks I would like to know more about:

Marisol
Baby Girl, 1963

This made me question why is there a baby's face put onto something that looks like a pumpkin shaped object. Also where the idea of a baby's face came in mind in creating with this kind of object.

Nancy Dwyer
Kill Yourself, 1989

This caught my eye in a negative way, it made me question why this artist would put something so harsh and put it around bubbles and in cartoon lettering. What made this artist take the happy things from a childhood and mix it with very hurting words.
