Module #12 Video Review
#1. I chose Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's because I always liked the 60's decade it was a crazy decade. I also chose the Andy Warhol video because I have heard of his name before but do not know much of him and I would like to know more about him.
#2. Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's
Key Concepts:
-The attitudes of European avant-grande art and American art came together to make Abstract Expressionism.
-But it was soon rejected because it was seen as an egocentric character and nonfigurative which was then replaced by ultra-objective: Pop Art.
-Frankenthaler was known as mystical and feminine and likes to make the observer want to feel a warming and exhilarating sense of expressionism.
-Andy Warhol was known as the most famous artist of the Pop Art movement.
Andy Warhol: Images of an Image
Key Concepts:
-Known as a commercial artist and used advertising images in his work.
-Used Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor as his inspiration.
-Liked to use silk screening.
-His photographs were blown up and put onto silk screens then transferred to paper and canvas using ink and paint.
-Used consumer products as silk screen images.
-Shot around 100 films.
-Made dozens of self portraits.
-Used his world to address race rioted, the cultural revolution in China, the conquest of the moon, and the universal reign of the dollar.
#3. The text and videos relate to each other because they both talk about the starting of the Expressionism and Pop Art, art works and artists during these movements, and the inspiration of Andy Warhol's art.
#4. I liked the films because it helped me to learn about the leaders of the art movements and the characteristics involved with the works of art that were used to define Expressionism and Pop Art.

Art Gallery #2
https://www.burchfieldpenney.org/exhibitions/exhibition:07-12-2013-09-15-2013-ben-perrone-illusion-dellusion/
Step 1:
#1. Ben Perrone: Illusion/Delusion
#2. A tribute made to service men and women.
Step 2:
#1. Track lighting to focus on the piece mainly.
#2. Just plain white.
#3. Regular dry wall, not much else I think so that the art catches the eye first
#4. It is kind of all over but it leads you to making a decision of where you want to go and it is like little surprises each time.
Step 3:
#1. Very organized, easy viewing access.
#2. After seeing the tribute to service men and women I noticed many other things pertaining to service men.
#3. The way that some were represented through objects like bags displayed to show the lives lost then there were actual photos.
#4. Inside a glass case.
#5. It gave a description on a piece of paper saying name, title, dates, and media.
#6. Spaced a great amount away from each other. I think to ensure that the viewer actually can study the artwork and try to understand the meaning behind it, symbolizing the importance.
Artwork #1:
Phillip Burke
Neil Young
Oil on canvas
1956
48x60 inches

Artwork #1:

Oil on canvas

This painting shows a man that looks like a rockstar. It is very colorful and catches the eye easily with the vibrant colors. This is a old man, smoking a cigarette, and playing the guitar, it seems very 80's to me. The principles used include rhythm in the use of the color in the entire painting and emphasis on the entire man himself in the way of the colors. The elements used include color used within himself, the guitar, and shirt. Shape in the way it resembles the man himself and the guitar. I think the artist tries to represent the way a musician can bring so much life and happiness in their music.
Artwork #2:
Emil Schult
Robert Moog
Reverse Glass Painting
This picture looks like it could be very old with the old style man and what looks like a machine with a splash of color to give it a little life. The principles used in this painting include movement in the way the painting looks like it is being pulled in the middle to one side. Pattern in the colors used and the proportion of orange and yellow. Elements used include color in the way orange and yellow are incorporated. Line and shape both in the way the painting seems to be getting pulled to one side.
Artwork #3:
Ben Perrone
Illusion/Delusion
Black paper bags
2009
At first looking at this artwork it gets my mind thinking of what could this artwork represent? Then after reading the description it seems dark and sad. The paper bags looking small to a huge amount on the top looking like an upside down pyramid. The principles used include proportion with the way the bags are aligned. Emphasis with light to create an importance on the black bags. Elements used include shape how it looks like an upside down pyramid. I think this artist is trying to show the significance of the people lost during war.
Question:
It was cool to go see how the artists are different from each other and how they are incorporated with each other.

Module #11 Video Review
#1. I chose these videos merely because of the titles, Dada and Surrealism and The Impact of Cubism. It is interesting to see the differences of art movements discussed.
#2. The Impact of Cubism: Key Concepts:
- "The Breakfast Table": Juan Gris, used the spiritual elements, abstraction, imagination, and real objects.
-Unfamiliar ways to represent space and form.
-"The Violin" used the musical composition to layer elements of sound.
-Spirals forms direction, focus attention and symbolizes electric lights.
-Kazimir Malevich, Mysticism
-"Nude on a Staircase": Duchamp, controlled motion is balanced in a fixed setting.
-Mystical experiences shown in religious icons.
-"Farewells":Umberto Boccioni
Dada and Surrealism: Key Concepts:
-Dada movement was a reaction to WWI.
-German artist Kurt Schwitters
-Surrealism opened a new avenue for artistic creation by ignoring the reasoning process and tap directly into the unconscious mind.
-Realization of the unlimited possibilities of collage, used rural objects in his art
-Light dances off of his objects
-Hannah Hoch, Dadaist
-Used art to attack society that she detested
-The 1919 "Cut With the Kitchen Knife" used chaotic figures to make a monumental political statement
-"The Saddest Man in Europe": George Grosz
-Nazis burned his art
-"Pillars of Society": bitter attack on his enemies
-Joan Miro: Spanish Surrealist
-Despairs that WWI did not end the wicked ways of government
-"Dutch InteriorII": paintings one experiences two different ways of looking at the world
-"La Fortune": Man Ray
#3. Both the readings videos and text relate talking about Surrealism, Dada, and Cubism and how it effected the viewers feelings when looking at art like paintings from the movement. Explained the main artists and their works that best represent the movement.
#4. I enjoyed learning from these videos and especially the artist Sonia Delaunay. The basic concepts of Cubism in her work line of fashion designer and interior decorating. She also contributed to the Avant Garde trend in fashion.

Module #10 Video Review
Video Review:
#1. I chose the two videos of African Art because I
never really learned anything about the African background of art.
#2. Key Concepts: African Art: Legacy of
Oppression
-Magical pieces of art
-Some artwork is realistic
-While others are abstract
-The masks were made for many reasons and occasions
African Art:
-Used to decorate homes
-Used clothing, hairstyles, and singing to express
themselves
-Ceremonies were held with color, sound and
movement
-The rock art represented animals
#3. The text and videos relate because they both go
deep into the culture of African art. African art is very unique and different
from any other region's art culture. The african art is very spiritual. Their
ceremonies and rituals are also seen as forms of art.
#4. I enjoyed watching these films because it gave me information of how
African art was. Their ceremonies were uplifting and happy. They made masks to
use to teach and represent different things.
Art Making/Material Exploration

#2. I chose these masks because looking through each, these stood out the most. Seeing these, the features stood out and put an idea of pictures of masks in mind. The hair on the wooden mask, the black eyes and yellow strip, and the ears(feathers), nose and circular eyes made me interested in using them for my mask.
#4. For my mask, elements I used was texture for the ears by using feathers. Color for the eyes, feathers, hair, and yellow streak on the forehead. Line for the eyes, nose, and shape of the mask. For the principles, I used variety for the amount of different things like the feathers, string hair, and markers to add color. I used emphasis for the hair, ears, and nose making them stand out the most.
#5. Sketching the mask out was a lot easier than actually completing it. I expected it to come out way better but with my materials I had available did not cooperate like I expected. I did think it was cool to create something completely random though.

Module #9 Hand Drawing
#1. Using my hand as a subject matter was not very new, since we use our hands for everyday use. Although the focus I had to use to look at the lines in my hands made it interesting since I never really knew how the lines looked.
#2. For this I used pencil because it was the only thing I had at the time. Even if I did have charcoal to use I still would have picked the pencil because charcoal is very messy and you cannot erase it that easily.
#3. I first drew my left hand with my dominant hand, and it was super easy and only look me about the seconds. On the other hand using my non-dominant was pretty strange, it took my double the time because I had to carefully position the pencil in my hand.
#4. I tried to draw my hand without tracing but it was too difficult with my non-dominant. I ended up tracing both of my hands but obviously free handed the lines and nails. The difference I found is that doing the drawing/tracing with my dominant hand I barely put effort into it but with my non-dominant I had to concentrate and take my time. Free drawing with my non-dominant the shade of the pencil mark is darker than my dominant hand.
#5. If it was free drawing like making random shapes and no real sense of line I would intentionally use my left non-dominant hand to create different things than using my right hand. I think it would add more to the painting or drawing.
Module #9 Video Blog
#1. I chose the videos, The Power of Art: Caravaggio and El Greco: Rediscovering a Master because in elementary and middle school I learned about Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. I have not learned about the two videos I chose before so I decided to learn something new.
#2. Key Concepts
The Power of Art: Caravaggio:
-He was considered the great predecessor of modernism
-He had an interest in controversial counter(reformation in pictorial art)
-One of Spain's greatest painters
-Other artists were inspired by his work
El Greco: Rediscovering a Master:
-Painted "The Calling of St. Matthew"
-Used people off the street as models in the Here and Now
-To society his paintings were indecent
-"The Death of the Virgin Mary"
-1608 he was announced the greatest painter out of all
-"The Beheading of John the Baptist"
#3. The videos and the text talked about religion during the Renaissance. How some of the artists portrayed their views on religion in an evil way and some portrayed it as a holy way. The text also talks about how many other artists viewed religion.
#4. I liked the films because two of the artists I knew about, and the other two I had no idea about and probably would never if I hadn't watched the videos. The video talked about their life and what they accomplished during their time.
